Markup vs. profit margin — what's the difference?

Markup is calculated on cost: a 50% markup on a $100 item means you add $50, selling for $150. Margin is calculated on revenue: that same transaction has a 33.3% margin ($50 profit ÷ $150 revenue). This matters because retailers and manufacturers often use markup, while finance teams use margin. Mixing them up causes real pricing errors — a 50% markup ≠ 50% margin.

Common markup rates by industry

Retail clothing: 100–300%. Electronics: 10–30%. Food and beverage: 100–300%. Software/SaaS: often 70–90% margin (very low cost of goods). Professional services: 50–100% markup on labor cost. Wholesale: 20–50%. If your markup feels arbitrary, benchmark against your industry — underpricing is the most common small business mistake.
